The Evolution of Vaping Devices

The first commercially successful electronic cigarettes were made available in 2003. In the years that followed, various vaping devices entered the market, improving upon the previous models. As a result, the e-cigarettes sold today are incredibly efficient and effective. Manufacturers go out of their way to provide their clients with the ultimate vaping experience.

One can break down the evolution of vaping devices into three generations — cig-a-likes, vape pens, and mods. Each one has its own distinct features and build. If you want to learn more about them, read on! We are going to touch on how vaping devices work, as well as provide you with a general overview of their evolution.

How Do Vaping Devices Work?

The majority of vaping devices consist of four components. The first one is a reservoir that holds a liquid solution. The said solution, called e-liquid or e-juice, tends to contain nicotine, flavorings, and various chemicals. Other components include a heating element, also known as an atomizer, a power source, and a mouthpiece.

In numerous vaping devices, such as the ones sold at Vapekit, puffing activates the power source. In most cases, the power source comes in the form of a rechargeable lithium-ion battery. Upon activation, it sends electrical currents to the atomizer, which heats the e-liquid up. The resulting vapor or aerosol is then inhaled through the mouthpiece.

First Generation

The first e-cigarette was the Ruyan. It was invented in 2003 by Hon Lik, a Chinese pharmacist. The setup of this device is pretty straightforward, consisting of a battery, an atomizer, and a flavor cartridge. It performs the same function and looks similar to an ordinary tobacco pipe.

In 2006, the cartomizer was invented. It consists of an atomizer and a flavor cartridge, hence the name. It was made to look like imitation cigarettes and has a very limited lifespan. Users can refill it, but it is rarely worth the hassle. If you are finished vaping, you might as well throw it away.

Second Generation

The second generation of vaping devices constituted vape pens. A vape pen is larger than any of the cig-a-likes mentioned above. The reason for that is fairly simple. It made it possible to improve the performance of both the power source and the atomizer.

What made vape pens unique were three critical features. The first one is a button that allows the user to turn the power source on and off and is used as a firing mechanism. In comparison, cig-a-likes are auto-fired when inhaled. The second one is a chip responsible for regulating how long one can hit the device. It usually will not fire after ten seconds, which prevents overheating.

As for the third one, it is the clearomizer. Its tank has a clear tube that lets you see how much e-liquid is left inside and a better wicking mechanism. In other words, the cartomizer was a significant step-up from cartomizers.

Third Generation

Third-generation devices are commonly known as mods. It is short for modification. The term was coined when vapers started turning flashlights into vaping devices. It gave the user more power, making for a better vaping experience.

Nowadays, mods are also known as advanced personal vaping devices. The technology incorporated into an average mod provides you with plenty of power and personalization opportunities. As a result, using mods can result in a great vaping experience.

Mods can be divided into regulated and unregulated ones. Both use sub-ohm coils. Compared to the technology used by previous generations, such coils allow for higher wattage. The higher the wattage, the more vapor the vape can produce.

Regulated mods are equipped with a special chip. It is responsible for regulating the electrical current in the vaping device. As a result, it functions as a safety mechanism and prevents the vaping device from overheating. In addition, such mods have a variable voltage that makes it possible to increase or decrease power.

On the other hand, unregulated mods do not have the chip mentioned above. Instead, they are limited by the resistance of their coils and your discretion. Obviously, such devices are not meant for beginners. Using one requires a basic knowledge of Ohm’s law and electrical systems. If you unknowingly push the battery too far, you are likely to end up causing an explosion.

Fourth Generation

The fourth generation devices are commonly called the pods. Pod vapes can be characterized by their low-powered batteries and compact size and are available in both prefilled and refillable variants.

The fourth generation of vaping technology also introduced a revolutionary solution called ACM, short for Alternating Current Mode. Unlike the previous generations of vapes, ACM-capable vaping devices can send electricity through the coil in both directions.

ACM has a big impact on the efficiency of heat transfer between the vape juice and coil, leading to significant improvements in flavor and coil life.

Alternating Current Mode also allows users to adjust the Hertz frequency waveforms, further enhancing the spectrum of flavors that can be produced by ACM-capable vapes.

In Conclusion

The vaping industry has come a long way since the days of the first cig-a-likes. The devices available today are incredibly advanced and provide you with plenty of options. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced vaper, you will surely find a device that will suit your needs in no time.

In case you run into any trouble, do not be afraid to contact the customer support team of your favorite online vape shop.
